In honor of National Heart Month- help us share, seconds count, this could save your life or the life of someone you love. The Winston-Salem Professional Fire Fighters Association still rejoices that the life saving actions of our firefighters, Forsyth County Emergency workers, and those waiting at the hospital saved one of our own. Our Brother Tony Spagnoletti survived the Widow Maker. SecondsCount.org shares his story... The fire we responded to this morning at 132 Scott Hollow Drive was the home of one of our own, Winston-Salem Fire Captain Gary Poplin. His wife and son were transported to the hospital and the home had significant damage. They have lost most everything. The Winston-Salem Professional Fire Fighters Association has set up an account at Emergency Responders Credit Union in Winston-Salem under WSPFFA- Poplin Family Fund if anyone would like to help this family out. At this time the family is in great need of clothing, sizes are below. Clothing items can be dropped off at the Emergency Responders Credit Union. Monetary contributions for the family may also be made online at http://www.gofundme.com/ljnzac. They will need many things as they start to settle again and we will continue to share those needs through our social media outlets. If you have questions regarding donations you may contact Ashley (WSPFFA Social Outreach) at [email protected], 944-3356, or through our social media sites. If you don't have a basement, pick a small, windowless interior room or hallway on the lowest level. With the approach of tornado season, fire fighters want to remind you to DUCK when a tornado warning is issued or if threatening weather is forecast. DUCK stands for: D - Down to the lowest level U - Under something sturdy C - Cover your head K - Keep in shelter until the storm has passed "It's also important to know your community's tornado alert system," says David Pollard, a fire fighter and IAFF Local 682 president. "This is critical since tornados often occur suddenly with little or no warning." Fire fighters recommend subscribing to alert services that will send text messages or emails alerting you to local emergencies or bad weather. In addition, know how to recognize an approaching tornado by watching for these signs: After the tornado, if you have been evacuated from your home, return only when officials say it is safe to do so. Following any significant natural disaster, it's also important to have a licensed professional check the gas system and electrical wiring of your home for damage. For more resources on what to do in the event of a tornado, visit the IAFF web site at www.iaff.org/disaster . If you are in immediate danger and need emergency help, call 9-1-1. Today we celebrate our 73rd Birthday. On this day in 1941 a charter was installed for the Winston-Salem Fire Department and The Winston-Salem Professional Fire Fighters Association, IAFF Local 682 was created. Many great brothers and sister have been a part of this organization over the years. Winston-Salem Professional Fire Fighters represents over 200 local firefighters, both active and retired, in their efforts to take a pro-active approach to fire safety and community services throughout our area. Through the generosity and support of the community and hard work of its members, WSPFFA is able to give back to the community through many local projects. A peak at our history... http://wspffa.org/index.cfm?section=10&pagenum=190 Winston-Salem Professional Fire Fighters Association IAFF Local 682 Fire Fighters at Brenner Children's Hospital! The Winston-Salem Professional Fire Fighters, Local 682, will be teaming up with Emmy Award winning Producer / Director and Animator Art Leonardi to bring Beetle Bug and friends to the children at Brenner Children's Hospital. On Sunday, February 23, the Winston-Salem Professional Fire Fighters and Animator Art Leonardi spent the afternoon visiting with the children and their families at Brenner Children's Hospital. Leonardi flew in from California to join the Winston-Salem Professional Fire Fighters for this outreach event. These families often spend extended amounts of time at the hospital away from home. Being in the hospital can be a scary and stressful time for the children. The Winston-Salem Fire Fighters enjoyed interacting with the families and children and helping make it a fun day in one of Brenner's playrooms. Leonardi sat at the easel and illustrated many characters to the delight of the children. He demonstrated characters such as the Pink Panther, Tiny Toons friends, and our own Beetle Bug and friends. Art Leonardi is quite a character himself and had the children laughing and excited to get their own signed illustrations. It was a wonderful time of fellowship for all. "This winter has been a busy time for our fire fighters but taking time to be a part of this is important to our organization. It's hard to put into words how rewarding this is to everyone involved. It's a fun way for us give back and help the children and their families enjoy their winter and time at Brenner Children's Hospital." said David Pollard, president of WSPFFA. Due to privacy policies for patients at Brenner Children's Hospital, media wasn't allowed to join us at the actual event. Media was invited to join us earlier in the day for a meet and greet opportunity with Art Leonardi at the WSPFFA, Local 682 Union Hall. Media had the opportunity to mingle with Art as he did illustrations for local children and shared his experiences in the entertainment industry, as well as try out the Beetle Bug Fire Safety App, which is a joint project with the WSPFFA About WSPFFA: Winston-Salem Professional Fire Fighters represents over 200 local firefighters, both active and retired, in their efforts to take a pro-active approach to fire safety and community services throughout our area. Art has extraordinary talent and has the ability to bring all the characters to life, including Beetle Bug and his pals. About Beetle Bug Fire Safety App: The Winston-Salem Professional Fire Fighters Association teamed up with Art Leonardi and the Beetle Bug Fire Safety App Team in 2013. It's a fun and informative fire safety app for the family. WSPFFA is endorsing this family interactive app because it is a great tool in promoting fire safety that will lead to fewer injuries and fatalities. This app teaches fire safety with repetition in puzzles, music, and games. Beetle Bug encourages communication between caregivers and children and teaches the knowledge needed to stay safe before and if an emergency occurs. In version 2.0 coming later WSPFFA will be helping develop the fire safety aspect of the app. For a free preview go to the Apple Apps Store and find Beetle Bug. Please be sure to use the activation code wspffa when purchasing the app. You are not only getting a great safety tool and resource for your family, you are also supporting WSPFFA. For each $3.99 purchase of the Beetle Bug Fire Safety App, WSPFFA receives $1 that helps us fund our many community outreach projects. It is a great fire safety tool to prepare and keep your family safe. The app is currently only available for iPhone, iPod or iPad, however in the future it will be expanded to the Android market. PRESS STATEMENT Date: 7/3/2013 There have been a number of misinterpretations concerning the Winston-Salem Fire Department’s recent change in responding to emergency medical calls. Primarily, it is not the fact that the WSPFFA and a majority of fire department members do not want to respond to the needs of citizens, but we feel that by making a small change in our protocols, we can serve the citizens of Winston Salem more effectively and efficiently. The misguided assumption that members of the fire department want to reduce their workload by not answering emergency medical call is ludicrous, at best. Generally, firefighters love to answer calls and want to make a difference in the community. But there are specific documented cases where firefighters have answered a medical call, with an emergency response, to “pink eye” and a “tooth ache.” Is that the best use of our time and training? Does it make sense for the fire department to respond to medical offices or skilled nursing facilities where doctors and nurses, who hold higher medical certifications, are treating the patient? Only to find out that the patient required routine non-emergency transport to the hospital which is a service that the fire department does not provide? In addition to the normal daily activities (fire inspections, hydrant maintenance, public education programs, training, building and apparatus maintenance, etc.) we do respond to non-emergency requests for service, such as problems with smoke detectors, fire alarms, and fire safety surveys on a regular basis. The main objective here is to provide high quality emergency service to the community, regardless if it decreases or increases the amount of calls that we answer. We disagree strongly with the “three strikes” rule as that can and will endanger life and safety in our opinion. People who abuse the 911 emergency systems should be addressed through the legal system and not compromise a potential response to a true emergency. The Winston-Salem Professional Fire Fighters only want to provide the best service possible to its citizens. Please do not misinterpret a change in policy for a lack of caring or concern on our part after all there is only one group of people that will crawl into a burning structure to save you and your loved ones and those are your Firefighters! Sincerely, WSPFFA President David Pollard
